An underground storage tank (UST) system is a tank and any underground piping connected to the tank. In Ontario USTs are regulated by Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). Once an UST ceases to be in use, or where it has been dormant (out of service) for two years the UST system is required to be removed and all associated contaminated soil and groundwater remediated.

Unlike some jurisdictions in the United States, Ontario owners of USTs are solely responsible for the costs of maintaining, upgrading, and removing their USTs and for any associated environmental remediation. Some fuel suppliers may have special financing programs to help homeowners in replacing USTs with an aboveground tank (AST).

JFM Environmental is licensed by TSSA as a “Petroleum Contractor” and one of its Principals, hold a “Petroleum Mechanic” license”. Our services include the removal and installation of USTs and ASTs conforming to TSSA standards.
